Luke Parker, a former MBS member and avid Blues fan has started a project to document Tate's Blues Jams which have been running at various locations in Madison for more than 30 years. James Earl Tate, past MBS President, toured with Luther Allison in Europe in the 70's after they connected at the original Nitty Gritty on Johnson Street. Tate's love of the Blues led to his organizing and running Blues Jams all over Madison now running on Thursday nights at the Knuckledown Saloon.
Here's what Luke is asking:
My name is Luke Parker and I have started writing a story about the blues jams that singer James Earl Tate has been hosting for at least thirty years. My hope is to have the jammers and fans contribute to the story by writing a little something about your experiences, memories, or lies and send it to me. I'm looking for stories from last week's jam to one that was held in the mid-eighties. An incredible number of people have joined in on Tate's weekly mission to keep the blues alive and it's a great story.
Please e-mail me with responses at firstname.lastname@example.org or snail mail to 614 Terrace Rd. Deerfield, Wi. 53531. See ya'll at the jams!
If you can help out with this project, please contact Luke!

At the special continued Annual Meeting, held at the Badger Bowl on December 14, nine MBS members stepped up to help keep the Blues alive in the Madison area. Three board members returned to keep up the good work and six new members were elected to join the board. Officers were elected by the board at the January 11 meeting.
A big thank you is extended to those who have served on the 2015 Board of Directors but are now leaving the Board: Violet Moran, President; Tricia Hagen, VP; Jack Barker, Treasurer; and Members-at-Large Chas Miller, Joe Clevenger and David Herriot.
Milwaukee Repertory Theater, at 108 E. Wells Street in Milwaukee has an upcoming production that's sure to please blues lovers from every background. The Devil's Music: The Life and Blues of Bessie Smith is a fantastic show featuring Zonya Love, who is a phenomenal vocalist who was last on the Milwaukee Rep stage in The Color Purple after a run on Broadway.
It recounts the life of Bessie Smith, one of the Blues greatest vocalists. Laughter and bawdiness come together to deliver an entertaining and unforgettable evening as "The Empress of the Blues," Bessie Smith, gives an after-hours show and recounts a life as large and outrageous as her talent.
